Four armed men are still at large after two Tshwane metro police officers were shot and wounded in an attempted hijacking near Bronkhorstspruit, spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said on Thursday.
Aubrey Mkhwabane (47) and Chris Mashigo (27) were shot by four hijackers at a taxi rank in Zithobeni. Mkhwabane was hit in the upper body while Mashigo suffered gunshot wounds to his leg.
Mahamba said the two officers were recovering well.
“They are both fine. Mashigo was discharged and is recovering well at home. Mkhwabane is still in hospital under observation. He might be discharged soon,” he said.
On Tuesday, the two officers had just come off duty when they noticed two men pushing a Toyota Quantum taxi apparently stuck in mud.
The officers offered to help but the driver of the taxi suddenly cried for help, saying he was being hijacked.
The armed men opened fire on the officers before fleeing in a car. The two officers did not return fire.
“The suspects are still at large and we appeal to the public to come forward with any information. Anyone who can assist us can report to the Bronkhorstspruit police station on 013-932-9222 or their nearest police station. Alternatively, they can report to the Tshwane metro police department on 012-358-7095/6,” said Mahamba.
