Disgruntled community members want building construction put on hold

Community members demand to benefit from construction of the Statistics South Africa’s building in Salvokop.

Furious Salvokop residents want the construction of the Statistics SA building in the area to cease until certain demands are met.

Salvokop community leader Bushy Mampuru revealed this to the media on Friday after a protest by disgruntled employees and some Salvokop residents at the construction site earlier in the week.

Mampuru said the protesters demanded that more local people be employed at the construction site and local companies be given sub-contract work.

“We will be radical and militant in our approach to solve the matter… we will only be disciplined once they are also discipline and come down and meet us,” Mampuru said.

Statistics SA said it had obtained a court interdict against several members of the Community Working Committee (CWC), preventing them from further disrupting construction work.

It said the CWC members locked the gates to construction site, barring workers from entering.

Mapuru said the court interdict would be challenged.

A number of police officers were keeping watch at the construction site.
