Fire consumes shack
A family lost everything when their shack mysteriously caught fire on Tuesday morning.
The Makhubela family from the Phomolong informal settlement in Mamelodi East has lost everything after their shack caught fire while they were asleep in the early hours of Tuesday. Thomas Makhubela (43) said: “We have lost everything we worked for and we are left with only the clothes on our backs.” The family is in shock.
They could not explain how their shack caught fire, especially since they said they switched off all electrical and other appliances before going to sleep. “I switched off everything, including the paraffin stove after I finished cooking, at around 22:00 and we went to sleep. We were awakened by smoke coming from the kitchen, and within seconds the whole shack was on fire,” said Makhubela.
“We have lost everything – ID documents, birth certificates, clothing – but we were lucky because our three children were still on holiday,” said Makhubela. However, the children lost their school uniforms and books.
The community tried their best to put out the fire, but to no avail. The Makhubelas are desperate for help or donations to rebuild their shack and start over again.
