Metro officer dies after taxi hit
A Tshwane metro police officer lost his life when he was hit by a taxi in the city on Tuesday morning.
A young Tshwane metro police officer died on Tuesday from injuries he suffered when a taxi knocked him over on Eskia Mphahlele Drive and W.F Nkomo Street, spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said.
This happened while the 26-year-old officer was directing morning traffic.
“The traffic lights were not working and he was controlling traffic at around 09:00 when he was hit by the taxi. The exact events that led to the accident are still being investigated.”
Mahamba said the officer was rushed to hospital after he suffered serious injuries.
“Doctors tried to save his life but he tragically died three hours later at around 12:00.”
The officer was one of the 500 new ones who joined the department last year.
“We are saddened by what happened. His colleagues were with him at the hospital and are traumatised. We send our condolences to his colleagues, friends and family,” said Mahamba.
Mahamba said a culpable homicide docket had been opened.
