Crime on the increase in Hercules areas

Police are worried about an increase of certain crimes in the Hercules sector 2.

There has been a drastic rise in some crimes in parts of Hercules, police said on Tuesday.

Sector two commander Sergeant Christo von Mollendorf said burglaries, domestic violence, assault and theft from motor vehicles had shown a marked increase since mid-December.

“As the police, we are putting structures in place to fight this problem. We are working with relevant parties and have deployed extra patrols in the area.”

Sector two comprises Daspoort, Claremont, Booysens and Hermanstad.

Mollendorf said sector one — Mountain View, Suiderberg and Lady Selbourne — also had a problem with burglaries.

Theft from motor vehicles was a particular headache in sector two

“We advise residents to park their vehicles where they are visible and make sure all their doors are locked at all times.”

Mollendorf said valuables like cellphones, laptops, radio tapes and other small items were being targeted.

“We want to notify the community of the increase in criminality so that would remain vigilant.”

He urged residents to alert the police should they notice anything amiss. Sector one commander Warrant Officer Harold Zinserling could be reached on 082-372-0223 and Mollendorf on 082-319-9571.
