Five shot and wounded in taxi violence

Taxi violence in Atteridgeville has left five people seriously wounded.

A taxi owner and four others were shot and seriously wounded in Atteridgeville on Thursday morning, police said.

Spokesperson Captain Doniah Mothutsane said the Atteridgeville Saulsville Taxi Owners Association (ASTOA) went on a tour around 06:30 to check whether taxis operating in the area were members of the association.

“It is alleged that a white Quantum taxi carrying an unknown number of suspects passed by ASTOA’s offices and suspects started shooting randomly.”

Mothutsane said a taxi owner, three drivers and a passer-by were wounded.

“The victims were taken to Kalafong hospital for treatment and no one has been arrested.”

A taxi driver, who asked not to be named, said the local taxi association did not want long distance taxis to operate in the area because they were “stealing” clients.

Police were investigating a case of attempted murder.

Mothutsane appealed to anyone with information on the matter to call the police on 08600-10111 or to sms Crime Line on 3221.
