MEC shocked by metro cop killing

Gauteng community safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane expressed shock on Thursday at the death of Tshwane metro police officer Daniel Matjeke (26) after he was hit by a taxi while directing traffic.

Matjeke was knocked over while directing traffic on the corner of Eskia Mphahlele Drive and W.F Nkomo Street on Tuesday morning. He was rushed to hospital but died a few hours later.

A culpable homicide docket has been opened but no arrests have been made.

The MEC said: “I am deeply saddened by this violent behaviour displayed on members of the law enforcement agency. These are people charged with the responsibility to serve and protect the citizenry of our country.”

A memorial service was held for Matjeke at the Tshwane metro police department’s headquarters on Thursday.

Several Metro management officials and colleagues spoke at the memorial, including Commander Gert van der Merwe.

He said: “I am very thankful to be able to render a mark of respect to our colleague. We are deeply touched by by the loss of your son. He will be greatly missed and his warmth, kindness and peaceful spirit will always be remembered.”

A cousin of Matjeke, Ernest Methi, spoke on behalf of the family.

“Because the manner in which he died was so tragic, his body will not be allowed in the house. The funeral will take place on Sunday 07:00 after which he will be buried at Zandfontein Cemetery,” Methi said.

Metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the department was saddened by the tragic death.

“We are saddened by what happened. His colleagues were with him at the hospital and are traumatised. We send our condolences to his colleagues, friends and family,” said Mahamba.

Nkosi-Malobane said she hoped for speedy investigations in the matter to ensure the responsible person faces the law.

“My deepest condolences to the bereaved family in these difficult and trying times,” said the MEC.
