Man digging up mother’s body parts arrested

Police are investigating the possibility that a man's mother was buried in a grave he violated by removing body parts.

Police arrested a man for violating the grave of his mother  in Temba on Thursday night.

He apparently removed body parts, including hair and bones, and stored them at his house, police spokesperson Kabelo Marumo said on Friday.

He said police were investigating the possibility that the culprit’s mother had been buried in the grave.

“Police are in a process of obtaining legal documentation to exhume the body in order to determine whether the grave was that of his mother.”

The body parts were taken to a forensic laboratory for examination.

The man was arrested after police received information from his friend who witnessed the crime.

“Police followed up on the tip-off, which led to the cemetery where they discovered the disturbed grave,” said Marumo.

The motive for the crime was not immediately clear.

The man will appear in the Moretele Magistrate’s Court in Ga-Rankuwa on Monday.
