A house robbery was foiled in Centurion on Friday by the swift reaction of members of the community policing forum and the security firm Monitor Net.
Martin Siebert of Monitor Net said two of the firm’s officers, Joseph Aphane and Timothy Ndaremba, were on the lookout for a new-model white Volkswagen Beetle, believed to have been used in earlier robberies. They spotted the vehicle in the driveway of a property in Eldoraigne.
Two would-be robbers saw the Monitor Net vehicle and jumped over a fence to get away. A neighbour a few houses away panicked when she saw the two men storm her yard, and fired shots at them. The Monitor Net officials heard the shots and spotted the two men fleeing down the road.
Hannes du Buisson of Centurion Concerned Citizens (CCC) said the two men were eventually caught by Monitor Net officers and CCC patrollers, who blocked off the road.
The white Volkswagen Beetle was is believed to have been used in several house break-ins in Centurion, and was stolen from Benoni. The suspects already had a boot full of stolen television sets when they were interrupted.
Du Buisson said: “The success of this story can be linked to the wonderful and swift co-operation between CCC and Monitor Net in order to apprehend these criminals and take back our streets.”
.The two men were arrested and charged by the Wierdabrug police.
