Police clamped down on crime during the festive season.
No fewer than 113 people were arrested in the Wonderboompoort police precinct alone during the festive season, police said on Monday.
Spokesperson Warrant officer Wanda Olivier said the level of some types of crime in the area dropped during the festive season.
“Common robbery… assault and thefts of motor vehicles are some of the crimes that had shown a decrease during this time period,” Olivier said.
However, armed robbery, business burglaries, malicious damage to property and thefts from and out of motor vehicles remained a concern.
“The station received excellent support from community patrollers who did more than their share during the holidays to help combat crime,” Oliver said.
Moot police spokesperson Lieutenant Linda Jerling said a 30-year-old man was jailed for 18 years in January for burglary and theft.
Nkutlwane Alfred Tshoke had been positively connected to a number of break-ins by his fingerprints found on the scene.
Investigating officer Warrant officer Louis Hoffmann was praised by one of the victims for his effort and no-defeat attitude during the investigation.
Jerling said decreased crime in the Moot precinct could be attributed to visible policing, special operations and the co-operation of security companies and community members.
“We would still like to urge community members to be safety-conscious, especially when parking their vehicles or motorcycles.”
Jerling warned residents not to report false crimes.
“If, at any time during the investigation, the police find that a false crime had been reported, the complainant could be criminally prosecuted. Insurance companies will also be notified,” she warned.
