Centurion taxi owner killed by rain of bullets
About twenty bullets were fired at a taxi owner on Tuesday night.
A taxi owner was killed in Monavoni, Centurion on Tuesday night when four armed men fired about twenty rounds at him. No apparent reason has yet been given for what looked like a cold-blooded murder.
Theo Petzer, Monitor Net spokesperson, said the man was driving home in his bakkie from a taxi association meeting in Diepsloot when two vehicles followed him. “Some of the men in one of the vehicles opened fire at the corner of Tulip and Louise streets and the people in the second vehicle started shooting shortly after that,” Petzer said.
“The vehicles then sped past the bakkie, turned around and fired more shots.” Petzer said Monitor Net reaction officers were patrolling the area when they saw the vehicles speeding off. He said the man had already died when reaction officers and other witnesses rushed to the bullet-ridden bakkie.
An eyewitness, who was at the scene shortly after the shooting, told Rekord he heard the first gunshots just after 19:00. The witness, who prefers to stay anonymous, said he immediately rushed to the scene and discovered the man’s lifeless body behind the steering wheel.
“The man had several gunshot wounds to his body,” the witness said. “The bakkie’s hazards were blinking and a cellphone was ringing on the dashboard. There was cash on the passenger seat and bullet holes in the door.”
The witness said he found several empty bullet shells, believed to be those of a 9 mm pistol and an R5 rifle, scattered on the ground.
Petzer confirmed about twenty shots were fired.
Captain Louise Steynberg, police spokesperson, confirmed the shooting but could not provide more details and information about the shooting was still sketchy.
