Two men have been arrested for brutally attacking three donkeys with a panga and an axe in separate crimes.
Two of the three wounded donkeys were put down by the Tshwane SPCA as the animals suffered too much.
SPCA inspector Mishack Matlou said the first man was arrested on Friday morning by police in Klipgat in Mabopane after he stabbed another man’s donkey with a panga on Thursday.
Matlou said the donkey suffered severe stab wounds to the chest area and was in terrible pain when the SPCA and police arrived.
“We put the donkey to ‘sleep’ and the man was taken into custody,” Matlou said.
It was not clear why the man attacked the donkey.
Also on Friday, another man was arrested for attacking two donkeys with an axe in Lebotwane, close to Klipgat, on Thursday.
Matlou said the donkeys were still attached to a cart at the time.
“One of the donkeys were slightly injured but the other had to be put down as it was severely wounded.
It was believed the man attacked the donkeys when the owner, who accused the killer of stealing some of his other donkeys, confronted him at his house.
The owner was apparently driving the donkey cart when the man with the axe attacked.
