Teen killed in Winterveldt
Mahlangu was shot and killed and two other people were wounded.
An 18-year-old boy was killed when he was hit by a stray bullet in Winterveldt on Saturday. Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembi Nowathe said on Tuesday the 18-year-old Katlego Mahlangu was killed by a bullet when a quarrel broke out between a police officer and a group of people at a Winterveldt tavern.
“It is alleged that a quarrel broke out between the officer and a group of people who were dancing in the middle of the street outside a tavern. He requested the group to allow him to drive past.” Nowathe said the officer fired warning shots in the air.
Mahlangu was killed and two other people were wounded. “The officer was disarmed, stripped naked and stoned before he was set alight,” said Nowathe. She said Mahlangu died on arrival at Kgabo Clinic. “It was not clear as to what might have happened as there were mixed reports from the witnesses.”
Nowathe said the two injured people were taken to Odi hospital. An inquest docket has been opened. No one has been arrested.
In an unrelated incident, a 74-year-old man was tied and robbed of items worth more than R29 000 at his home in Knoppieslaagte in Erasmia.
According to Constable Tumisang Moloto the man was sleeping when three men broke into his house and pointed a firearm at him. “It is alleged that two men tied the homeowner up with a cable tie and ransacked his house. One laptop, two cameras, and three cellphones were stolen.”
No one has been arrested yet and a case of house robbery was opened.
