Metro cops “rob mother and kids”
The Tshwane metro police department is investigating claims that its officers robbed a woman and her children on Monday.
Claims that Tshwane metro police officers had robbed a mother and her two children near the Zandfontein cemetery west of Pretoria are being investigated, spokesperson Superintendent Kuki Tshabalala said.
“The matter is being investigated by the Tshwane metro police department. No further statement can be made at this stage,” Tshabalala said on Tuesday.
Eyewitnesses captured photos of the crime on Monday, and circulated these on social media. One of the officers apparently held a three-year-old girl at gunpoint while the family’s car was ransacked and valuables were stolen.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) said it had informed the metro police management of the matter and requested an urgent investigation.
DA Tshwane community safety spokesperson, Karen Meyer, said corruption in the Tshwane metro police department was getting worse by the week.
“There are only two ways of ensuring that this kind of behaviour stops. The first is proper training and evaluation when officers are appointed and the second is to act decisively against transgressors.”
She said the DA requested an investigation into and review of the metro police in 2010, but the African National Congress (ANC) voted against this.
