Four pupils from Uitsig High School in Rooihuiskraal recently struck fear into the hearts of would-be thieves when they tackled and subdued two muggers just outside their school last week.
Jaryd Botha, a grade 11 pupil from Uitsig High School, was waiting outside the school on Thursday for his mother to pick him up when two men approached him and asked if he knew where Blue Valley mall was.
“I told them I didn’t know, even though I did, as I was suspicious. Just then, I saw one of the two pulling out a large pocket knife. He demanded and took my cellphone,” said Botha.
Botha returned to the school grounds where three of his close friends, Tiisang Thankge, Tristan Howett and Tyler Rodney, all in grade 11, noticed he was shaken up.
“He told us he had just been mugged. The three of us then decided to see if we couldn’t find the two guys who mugged Jaryd,” said Thankge.
Howett said they spotted the culprits and chased after them.
“We finally caught up with them and demanded the return of Jaryd’s phone. They tried to get away, but as they did, Jaryd and his mom came around the corner in her car.”
Botha said he jumped out of the car and chased the two down.
“I used a Taser gun I grabbed from my mom’s car to stun them and get my phone back.”
Rodney said: “Although the two guys got away, we managed to get Jaryd’s phone back. Sometimes it could be rough around here, we don’t take any nonsense.”
Rodney said one of his teachers now called him “superhero”, adding: “Some people have also started calling me Rambo.”
The school’s head of discipline, Leon Booysen said: “We are so proud of this group of boys for standing up against crime and for being so brave.”
