Woman finds worms in biltong
Customers unhappy about allegedly buying rotten food at a Kwikspar in Danville.
The Kwikspar in Danville is under the spotlight after two customers bought food that were rotten and contained worms.
Local Daleen Swanepoel, who bought biltong at the Spar, said that she was eating the biltong when she discovered there were worms in the meat.
“I felt like throwing up when I saw the worms. I was very angry because I also gave it to my grandson who is four years old.”
Swanepoel said she went back to the Spar to let it know about what happened. The manager was speechless and offered to replace her biltong but she refused.
“I was very uncomfortable with the fact that I might have eaten the worms. I am not a worm eater so I gave the biltong to my dogs.”
Another customer, Sibongile Khumalo said she bought a macaroni dish from the same store.
“When my daughter was about to eat, she noticed the dish was sticky. When I checked it, the macaroni was off. We did not bother to go back to the store so we just threw it away.”
The owner of the Columba Kwikspar, Louis Jardien, said Swanepoel came into the shop and shouted and screamed at the manager.
“The manager offered to give her fresh biltong but she refused. He even offered to refund her but she just walked out.”
Jardien said the store underwent a hygiene check every quarter to try and prevent such things from happening.
“The food could have been off due to heat contamination. We make our macaroni with fresh cream and sometimes heat could be the problem.”
Jardien said he spoke to the area manager of Spar about what happened.
“We always do our best to prevent this kind of problem and would like to apologise to the customers for what happened.”
