Garstkloof Landfill Site still in use

Even though the Gartskloof Landfill Site supposedly closed in 2014, it is still being used as a dumpsite for building rubble.

The Garstkloof Garden Waste and Building Rubble Landfill Site in Elardus Park, which was supposedly closed in January 2014, is still a big concern, not only for residents in the area, but also for the Garstkloof Engen Filling Station near the site.

According to this filling station’s manager, Raymond Manaia, waste removal trucks from various construction and other companies use this dumping site on a daily basis, and spill dirt and dust on the Delmas and Jamestown roads immediately adjacent to the filling station.

“As far as we are aware, the site is supposed to be closed for rehabilitation, but various trucks still move in and out of the site, dumping load after load of building rubble and garden waste,” Manaia said.

“We are at the point where we are considering closing down our car wash, due to the amount of dirt and dust kicked up by the constant traffic of trucks moving in and out of the landfill site.”

Another issue is the fact that individuals who want to make use of the site are shown away, whereas big trucks access the site freely.

“We constantly have people screaming at us, demanding to know why they cannot have access to the site for their own garden refuse. We cannot answer them, because we are not associated with the landfill site.”

Rekord reported the closing of this landfill site in December 2013, stating residents in the area were thrilled that the site, which they believed had been mismanaged, was closing.

By the time of going to press, Tshwane metro was not available to confirm whether this landfill site was open or closed.
