Another blow has been dealt to illegal dumpers in Centurion when a resident made them clean up their mess.
Lehanne Harding Creevy, a Centurion resident who works in Tobie Street, next to the old Johannesburg Road, spotted a large construction vehicle parked on the corner of the old Johannesburg Road and Estcourt Avenue on Monday (16 February). Already fed up with illegal dumping, Creevy decided to take a closer look. She found a construction vehicle discarding large amounts of building rubble, consisting of sand, rocks and empty cement bags on the side of the road.
“I had looked to see what was happening, and when I saw what they were doing I confronted them. I contacted ward councillor Peter Sutton to let him know what was happening. Before long the group was starting to clean up the mess. It takes a second to dump the rubble, but took them more than an hour to clean it up,” said Creevy.
Cllr Sutton added that the old Johannesburg Road had long been a headache with illegal dumping. “This is one of the spots people most often discard rubbish, right next to the road. The problem is that when you see someone illegally dumping, you cannot force them to stay there. The best would be to contact the metro police, or to phone Tshwane and report the incident.”
This is not the first time people who were dumping illegally have been made to clean up their mess. On 25 January Mandy Van Der Berg, a Centurion resident, was on her way home on the old Johannesburg Road when she saw men with a bakkie labelled Office Group, dumping broken ceramics and building rubble.
Acting quickly, Van Der Berg took the bakkie’s keys to a police station, and returned to the scene with the police and stayed until the mess was cleared up.
Residents have been fed up with illegal dumping for months, and now seem to be putting a stop to it themselves.
