Lameck Misiwa wins Bestmed Tuks half-marathon
Tuks athletics stadium was a hive of activity on Saturday morning when more than 9,000 athletes arrived for the Bestmed Tuks road race.
True to its reputation as one of the largest events of its kind in Gauteng, the Bestmed Tuks race on Saturday again attracted more than 9,000 runners. They hit the streets of Hatfield on a glorious summer morning in their quest for a medal in one of the three races.
With its focus on community and family participation, the event this year included a new 1km race dedicated to raising awareness and funds for cancer and the 10km wheelchair races.
The main beneficiary of this event is the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa). Dries la Grange, CEO of BestMed and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Pretoria, Cheryl De La Rey, also competed in the newly-introduced 1km race dedicated to cancer.
Excellent performances were recorded in all the races, especially in the more serious 10km and 21km events where athletes showed brilliant form.
The 10km race was won by Sikhumbuto Serwe from Transnet in a time of 30 minutes and 33 seconds. Rutendo Nyhora from Nedbank won the women’s section of the 10km race. Her time was 35 minutes and 34 seconds.
Lameck Misiwa (67 minutes and 36 seconds) from Nedbank was the surprising winner of the half-marathon in the men’s section. He was followed by two Transnet athletes. Lucas Jani (67:41) came second and in third place was Vuyisile Tshoba (67:50).
In the women’s section of the official half-marathon, the Olympic athlete, René Kalmer from Nedbank, was too good for the rest. Her winning time was 78 minutes and 08 seconds. In second place was Kataza Shipalawa from Transnet (79:11).
The third lady was Prudence Zwane (84:01), who was also the winner of the category for athletes between 40 and 44 years.
