Power trips hit northern Pretoria suburbs

Frustrated households face morning disruptions as municipal technicians scramble to locate multiple cable and line faults across several communities.

Multiple medium-voltage electricity faults disrupted power across several northern Pretoria suburbs on Thursday morning.

According to the depot’s progress report, electricity disruptions were reported in Magalieskruin, Montana, Sinoville Extensions, Wonderboom, Haakdoornboom, Honingnestkrans and Vastfontein.

The report listed four medium-voltage incidents, although the summary heading indicated three.

According to the metro, one reported fault involved the Magalieskruin substation, where the cause of the outage was still unknown. The affected areas included Magalieskruin, Montana, Sinoville Extensions and Wonderboom.

A separate fault on the HB overhead power line, a main overhead electricity line supplying and impacting specific areas, also affected parts of Montana, including areas supplied through HB1, DP1 and PP1.

Meanwhile, a line trip on the SP overhead power line disrupted electricity supply along the SP1 line to SP75, affecting Haakdoornboom and Honingnestkrans.

Another fault was reported on the VAw overhead power line, affecting the VAw 91/4 section and the Vastfontein area. The cause of this incident had not yet been established.

Depot investigates network trips

The Wonderboom Electricity Depot confirmed that teams had been alerted to all four medium-voltage incidents.

The outages raised concerns among residents, particularly those who rely on a consistent electricity supply for their daily activities.

Sinoville resident Mickey van der Merwe said the disruptions were frustrating, especially for households that needed electricity to prepare for work and school.

“It is difficult when you wake up and find that there is no electricity, especially when you have a routine to follow. People need to get ready for work, prepare breakfast and make sure children are ready for school.

“We understand that faults happen, but residents would appreciate regular updates and an indication of when electricity could be restored,” said Van der Merwe.

Another Sinoville resident, Liza van Niekerk, said communication matters when outages affect several surrounding neighbourhoods.

“It is concerning when multiple areas are affected at the same time, and residents do not know how long they will be without electricity.

“We need better communication from the metro so that people can plan accordingly. Even if technicians are still investigating the problem, residents should be kept informed about the progress,” said Van Niekerk.

As of now, there is no estimated time for when restorations will occur.
