Senior officer calls it a day

Around 100 soldiers bid farewell to a senior officer in the South African Corp of Signals.

Members of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) bid farewell to a most senior officer in the South African Corp of Signals, Brigadier General Ian Fordred at Wonderboom Military Base.

Around 100 soldiers exercised a farewell parade to honour Brigadier Fordred who has served the Defence Force with distinction for 41 years.

“I have served the SANDF unreservedly, often to the detriment of myself and my family. I did this because of my strong believe in loyalty to my country and its people,” Fordred said.

Fordred said he felt sad to leave the army.

“It is a sad day for me but it is also a time to take up a new career.”

He said he would do some consulting work and would like to serve in the reserve force of the SANDF.

The veteran soldier said some of his memorable events in the SANDF, was to meet General Siphiwe Nyanga and Nelson Mandela.

Fordred, who has trained thousands of troops, encouraged soldiers to remain committed and loyal to protect the country.
