The Silverton police warns residents of a white Toyota Camry that is suspected to be involved in theft out of motor vehicles in the area, spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said.
Sepato said the car is suspected to be driven by a man who also commits theft from motor vehicles, stealing car radios and car parts.
“Currently, the car registration is unknown but we have received reports from residents after a resident’s car was broken into,” he said.
On Sunday, resident Carlos Costa posted a video on social media showing a man breaking into his bakkie.
The video shows an unknown man snooping around the bakkie before he throws an object, shattering the window. He then jumps into the car, grabs an item and flees.
Costa put up pictures of the white Camry on social media, which he said was used in the theft.
“This is the culprit. White Camry, passenger side doors are dented. Boot spoiler and towbar, tinted windows,” he said.
Sepato asks the community to be vigilant and to keep their valuables locked away in a safe place.
“We urge the community to remove valuables from their cars and to lock them safely in their boots instead of leaving them somewhere accessible in the vehicle.”
Meanwhile, Sepato requests the cooperation of the community as he said many residents refuse the safety pamphlets that are distributed at intersections.
“We have issued pamphlets providing safety tips but most residents refuse to take them. We ask them to cooperate as we are providing information for their own safety.”
