Christine Shaw has released the English translation of her Afrikaans self-help book, Hoe Ver Nog, titled Well, This Wasn’t on the Map! Navigating Stops, Setbacks and Surprises.
The book guides readers through life’s unexpected twists, using milestone moments such as grief over her brother’s passing – which led her to ride the Cape Argus – to smaller, poignant experiences. These include watching finches build nests outside her window, which she humorously calls her ‘reality television.’ Shaw complements her writing with Bible passages and relevant quotes to offer comfort and insight.

Her signature style combines endearing metaphors with reflection. “Back in our day, seat belts were a rumour and personal space was a battle line drawn with elbows,” she writes, recalling backseat road trips with her younger brothers.
The text includes perceptive observations on trauma and perception. “Trauma isn’t always loud,” she pens. “It lingers, distorting how we think, act, even breathe. Until we name it and give it space.” She also notes: “Seeing things differently is not always about seeing something new. Sometimes it’s about reviewing what’s already there – taking another look. Seeing it through a different lens. Also about seeing again and daring to dream again.”

The English edition features journaling prompts designed to encourage reflection on personal growth and internal beliefs. It is illustrated with whimsical cartoon designs by her daughter, Nicole Shaw, and contains extra chapters detailing what the author has learned since publishing the original book.
Shaw held the official book launch at NG Communitas in Waterkloof Glen on September 16. Attendees watched her in conversation with fellow author Jaco Strydom.
“I think that even when it feels as if there’s nothing you can do, there’s always a place to start,” Shaw told Rekord.
“Sometimes rest is waiting, sometimes recovery is waiting, but there’s always something you can do, even if it’s to reflect on where you are, where you’ve come from and where you’re going.”
