A man was arrested in Sunnyside on Wednesday for being in the possession of counterfeit money of R6.6 million.
Spokesperson Constable Asnath Malatsi said police acted on a tip-off from an anonymous source who thought the man was dealing in drugs in a block of flats they lived in.
“The police did not find anything in the suspect’s flat. They proceeded to the garage where they found the counterfeit money wrapped in plastic,” she said.
Malatsi said R4 200 000 in R100 notes and R2 410 000 in R200 notes were seized.
“The 32-year-old Cameroonian man was taken into police custody and will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday.”
Malatsi added: “Customers should always make sure the money they receive from shops is real. Some shop owners swap real money with counterfeit notes.”
