Nyaope drug addicts are terrorizing Mamelodi residents to a point where they steal in public during the day, which leads to mob justice.
Mamelodi police are warning the public not to take the law into their own hands. Instead they should go to the police station, make statements and lay charges, after handing over suspects to the police.
Several cases had to be thrown out of court due to a lack of evidence and because residents had taken the law into their own hands. “We want to work together with the community fighting crime, but we can only do that if we follow the law,” police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said.
“Once they take the law into their own hands they are also committing crime. Community members must always bring the suspects with incriminating evidence to the police so that justice can be done,” said Maheso.
Maheso also advised parents to get help urgently for children using drugs by taking them to rehabilitation centres.
