A wave of crime hit Centurion on Tuesday night, with hijackers getting active in separate parts of the city.
In the first episode, two men tried to hijack a woman on the corner of Burger and Station Avenues in Lyttelton Manor, said Loot van Dyk of Lyttelton Crime Stop.
The pair pounced as she entered her driveway. But the woman fought back, scaring off the two men. They fled and ran into the path of oncoming traffic. One of them was knocked over.
His accomplice turned around, grabbed his cohort and the two sped away in a white BMW 3 Series.
“A search was immediately organised and we remain on the lookout for the car,” said Van Dyk.
In another crime, eight men chased a delivery truck and it’s escort vehicle in Nellmapius Road and fired shots at them, disabling the escort vehicle, said Monitor Net spokesperson Hannes Laage.
“They forced the truck from the road and took the vehicle to the corner of Pierre van Ryneveld and Nellmapius roads where they started offloading the stock. They also setup a signal jammer and started to disable the tracking system.”
Laage said Monitor Net reaction officer Rodger Mdluli was the first to respond.
“As he approached the area, he identified the courier services vehicle parked alongside the road with two occupants inside. They opened fire on him as he passed them at high speed to request back-up.”
Laage said another company vehicle arrived to help. They made off with a batch of cellphones in two vehicles.
The scene was later handed over to the police, Laage said.
