A 59-year-old man was nearly shot at point-blank range on Thursday afternoon when two armed men followed him from the Absa bank in Van der Hoff Road in Hercules to Trouw Street in Capital Park.
The man apparently wanted to make a R70 000 deposit before the building was evacuated following a bomb threat at the bank.
The bank was evacuated at 11:40 when the assistant manager received an anonymous phone call that a bomb would go off within two minutes. The K9 and bomb disposal units were dispatched to the scene to do a sweep of the area, but found nothing.
“The man that was robbed was one of the clients at the Absa bank. In what seems to be a bank following incident, a dark blue Audi with two men followed the man from behind, unnoticed,” police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said.
He said the armed men tried to pull the man over and forced his vehicle off the road. According to Msimango, one of the robbers climbed out of the vehicle and fired a shot at the windscreen on the driver’s side – narrowly missing the driver.
The robber demanded the money that the man had on him before fleeing the scene. Both men are still at large.
At this stage it cannot be confirmed whether the bomb threat and robbery are connected.
