Safety tips for generator usage

Tshwane Emergency Services Department has come up with some safety tips for generator users.

With load shedding schedules to be the order of the day, The Tshwane Emergency Services Department has come up with safety tips for people who use generators, spokesperson Johan Pieterse said. More people are investing in portable generators due to the continuity of load shedding and power failures, but many are unaware of the risk of using a generator.

“The risks involved when using a generator include one being electrocuted when the generator is inadvertently connected to the house wiring system and the poisoning of carbon monoxide (CO) from the exhaust,” he said.

Pieterse listed the following as safety measures that should be considered when using a generator:

· Generators must always be used in well-ventilated areas or far away from any openings like doors and windows.

· A generator should never be used in an attached garage, not even if the door or windows are opened.

· Always place generators in the correct way so the exhaust flames cannot enter through windows or doors around the building.

· It is important to install the carbon monoxide alarm in the house and follow the correct instruction, installation and mounting height.

· Never refuel a generator while it is hot, it must always be turned off to let it cool down before refueling.

· Always make sure appliances are plugged into the generator or a heavy outdoor-rated extension cord. It is also important to check the cord before using in case there are some cuts or tears.

· Have a qualified electrician install a properly rated transfer switch in accordance with the national electrical code when connecting the generator to the house wiring and power appliances.

Any emergency incidents can be reported directly to the Tshwane emergency services on the following numbers: 10177 or 012 310 6300 or 012 310 6400.
