Work on bulk water system on track

Work has re-started on the bulk water pipeline project that runs from Moreleta Park in the east to Waverley in the Moot and completion is still scheduled for June this year.

Water pressure and related problems are likely to soon be a thing of the past in the Moot as construction on the Waverley part of the bulk water pipeline project has resumed.

Construction of the high-pressure bulk water pipe system came to an abrupt halt more than a year ago when the Tshwane metro cancelled its agreement with the initial contractors over a contractual dispute.

However, a new contractor had now been appointed and work had already started, said Jeannie du Plessis, community liaison officer for the pipeline project.

She said construction of valve chambers at the Waverley HL and LL reservoirs had already stared as well as work on laying of bulk water pipes.

This included the building of the in-situ Concrete Valve Chambers. The contractor had also started digging the foundations high up against the mountain on which the pipes, with a diameter of 1.2 meter, would be anchored.

“The other pipes on Breyer, Ooievaar and Koekoek streets in Waverley will also soon be checked by the new contractor,” Du Plessis said.

“We will give notice to the home owners and residents that will be affected by the work as soon as the contractor is ready to start.”

Du Plessis, who attends every site and other meeting with the contractors on behalf of residents, again gave the assurance that the new contractors were working very hard to finish this project in time. She said work was still on track and the completion date was still scheduled for June this year.

Du Plessis thanked residents for their patience with the project.

The construction of the bulk water pipeline project affects four different areas – one in the Moot and the others in the east of the city. In the east, January Masilela Drive in Faerie Glen, Garstfontein Road and Rubenstein Street in Moreleta Park are affected as well as Gary and Tucker Streets.

Residents who need more information about this project can contact Jeannie du Plessis, the community liaison officer, on jeanniedp@gmail.com.
