Man beaten by residents for alleged rape

A man beaten by the Atteridgeville residents for allegedly raping a woman on Saturday is still in hospital, police said.

Police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufumadi said on Wednesday an alleged rapist is still in hospital after he was attacked by angry Atteridgeville residents who said they caught him red-handed.

Mufumadi said the suspect was arrested after he was caught and beaten by locals for allegedly raping a woman on Saturday.

“The woman was on her way to work at around 06:00 when an unknown man appeared and grabbed her from the back. The suspect then blindfolded her, tied her hands with a belt and took her to a sewage pipe where he raped her twice and took her cellphone, money and bank card,” he said.

Mufumadi said the woman then managed to untie herself and with a help of a passerby, she called the police. “Some of the locals witnessed what happened and ran after the suspect. He was caught and beaten. Police found him and took him to hospital.”

Mufumadi said the suspect is still in hospital under police watch and will appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate Court as soon as he is discharged.
