The home owners’ association (HOA) of upmarket Woodhill Golf Estate in the east of Pretoria is still tight-lipped about the murder of one of their residents during the early hours of Friday morning.
This follows Rekord‘s request for answers about their security upgrade of R6 million last year and the whereabouts of the guards during the incident when John Lyons was shot and killed by two men who reportedly escaped through one of the four gates.
This security situation on this 220 hectare estate with 852 houses has been a cause of concern since last year when more than 17 security breaches were reported, including petty theft and attempted burglaries.
The HOA approved an additional R6 million security upgrade and there are currently four security companies providing their services: Protea Coin, Thompson Security, Omega and Fidelity.
Fidelity has the biggest contract, providing all the guards at the gates, but their contract will not be renewed at the end of this month. Reasons for the termination are unknown.
Natalie Hanekom, a spokesperson for Fidelity, said on Tuesday morning she could not comment on the reasons why their contract will not be renewed, “You have to speak to the HOA.”
She did not want to comment on the murder that shocked residents, or the whereabouts of the Fidelity guards on the night.
Rekord has reported that Fidelity deployed an extra nine guards last year to patrol the perimeters of the estate. “Our guards are only stationed at the gates. They are only responsible for gate-control and access,” Hanekom said.
Police are still following leads, but no arrests have been made yet.
