Students of the University of Pretoria (UP) in Hatfield campus this week visited the Lehlabile Secondary School in Mamelodi East to enlighten grade 12 pupils about careers and life at university.
The students also donated clothes and shoes to pupils from disadvantaged families.
The visitors were accompanied by Dr Susan Thembekwayo, who is in charge of women’s hostels at the university, and Miss Mamelodi Sundowns Second Princess North West, Katliso Modisane.
Thembekwayo said: “Once young people are at varsity they are on their own. In varsity there is no time to play games or dodge classes. Pupils need to be disciplined and need to be accountable for themselves.”
It was up to every individual to decide what kind of life he or she wanted to live.
“Behave properly and don’t hate your educators. Love them,” said Thembekwayo.
Principal of the school, Joseph Shilovhane, thanked the students for the generous donations of clothes to the pupils.
Andrew Molokome, a Grade 12 pupil said: “We learnt a lot today. Most of us did not even know how to apply for varsity.”
