Two matric pupils from Pretoria West High School were robbed of their schoolbags at gunpoint in Wespark on Monday afternoon.
Pupils Njabulo Nkomo and Dineo Kokame where heading home after picking up Kokame’s brother from a crèche when a car passed them a couple of times. It suddenly stopped in front of them.
“The men asked us where Beam Street was. We told them we did not know. One of the passengers got out, walked to the back door of the vehicle and took out a gun under the seat,” said Kokame.
One of the men told them to keep quiet, and demanded their cellphones and money. Kokame did not have her cellphone with her or any money. Nkomo’s cellphone and money were in his bag.
“The man searched us and when he could not find anything, he took our schoolbags. Luckily, my little brother was already home because he ran in front of us,” said Kokame.
She said she did not take her cellphone to school because she had been robbed a couple of times in their street.
“I went to the police to lay a charge. They told us there was nothing unusual about the robbery and declined to open a docket. We went back on Tuesday morning, and this time they agreed to open a case.”
Kokame said they went to the police to make them aware of what was happening in the area.
“We do not expect the police to come and search for the criminals but to just have a patrol vehicle in Wespark.”
The two pupils said they were not scared when they were robbed because they knew what was going to happen when the vehicle stopped in front of them.
Nkomo asked: “How can these people stoop so low to a point of robbing school children of their schoolbags?”
