A 34-year-old man from Mamelodi has been sentenced to 20 life sentences by the Pretoria Magistrate Court recently.
The man faced charges of rape, robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of live ammunition.
Spokesperson Johannes Maheso said Sam Phetla (34) committed the crimes between 2008 and 2011.
“The Mamelodi cluster’s family violence and child abuse unit secured life sentences for this man who has been committing these crimes,” he said.
Phetla was arrested in March 2010 after police investigations linked him to the crimes.
“This conviction sends out a message to all criminals who thought they would get away with committing crime.”
Maheso said the unit had done a good job and ensured Phetla got the sentence he deserved.
