School for girls instructed to retract adjusted marks
Pretoria High School for Girls was instructed by the Gauteng education department to retract additional marks awarded to matric pupils.
The Gauteng education department has instructed Pretoria High School for Girls to retract additional marks awarded to matric pupils after teachers allegedly called the pupils to return their reports for improved marks.
According to reports, pupils who achieved 79 percent for subjects last year were requested to bring their reports to school for the marks to be changed to 80 percent.
Gauteng education department spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said the department established that the school worked on the old system of condoning one subject per learner from a 79 percent to 80 percent.
“With the advent CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement), this practice was phased out. The department has instructed the school to retract the additional mark per learner and to re-issue reports based on the original promotion results generated at the end of the 2014 academic year,” Sekhonyane said.
She said parents of the affected learners were informed accordingly.
