Centurion primary school searched for drugs

Apparatus similar to that of a bong that is generally used for smoking dagga was confiscated at a primary school in Centurion on Wednesday.

The Tshwane metro police special projects unit have confiscated drug-related items at a Centurion primary school on Wednesday morning.

DA-counsellor Ina Strijdom was called in by the school after teachers noticed some pupils with sherbet resembling the widely recognised strawberry sticks that contain illegal substances. Strijdom said no form of drugs was found and none of the pupils tested positive for any illegal substances.

She said metro police did however confiscate items similar to that of a bong that is used to smoke substances such as dagga.

Metro police tested the items for drugs but it was negative. There was one pupil that had an electronic cigarette in his possession that he had bought from another pupil earlier that day,” Strijdom said.

She said the fact that a bong was found in the possession of a primary school pupil is worrisome.

“We are planning different routine raids throughout my ward to rid schools of any possible drug related incidents,” she said.

Strijdom urged parents to keep a keen eye on their children and identify any change in personality behaviour and to look out for unusual items around the home.

She warned residents not to stigmatise schools where random or routine drug raids take place. “Drugs are everywhere and schools are united in fighting drugs in schools,” she said.

Metro police did not provide comment immediately.
