A young mother has burnt to death when her boyfriend set a house in Mabopane on fire, police said on Friday.
Her mother and eight-year-old son survived but were still being treated in hospital, said spokesperson Captain Rheinet Motlana.
The boyfriend has since been arrested and appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court earlier in the week.
He faced charges of murder, attempted murder and arson and would be back in court on Wednesday next week.
Motlana said the man apparently poured petrol on his 33-year-old girlfriend, 55-year-old mother and boy before setting the house alight.
“The detectives received a tip-off that he was planning to kidnap the other kids, so they investigated and spotted the man at Kabokweni village near Nelspruit in Mpumalanga.”
Motlana lauded the detectives who cracked the case, including Captain Rose Siyanda, Constable JE Nkosi, Constable FE Nkosi, Constable Lehohla and Warrant Officer Motlhabane.
