Residents at the border of Erasmuskloof and Constantia Park are at their wits end regarding a leaking pipe that has been spilling clean water down Verdi Street for over 14 months.
Chris Siebert, one of the residents, said despite various efforts to contact Tshwane metro regarding the problem, someone only showed up last week.
“A Tshwane official came out to investigate and confirmed that the problem was a leaking pipe. However, he said they did not have the equipment to fix it then and promised to return on Monday. By 12:00 no one had shown up yet,” Siebert said. “I expect some six litres of water go to waste every minute and find it incredible that nothing has been done to address the problem to date.”
In a recent media statement by DA councillor Bruce Lee, he highlights Tshwane’s lack of adequate resources.
“The water infrastructure maintenance store in Region 2 is run by a single lady with no computer or network access. Everything is recorded by hand and if a job requires spare parts, she has to physically hold them in her hand to reserve them,” Lee writes.
“The department of water has been pleading with Tshwane’s IT department for the past two years to install computer equipment and provide network access but is met with silly responses like there are currently no IT tenders issued. This is the reason why a burst water pipe can sometimes take days before it is repaired,” Lee says.
Tshwane metro was not available for comment about the water leak.
