Police hunt for petrol thief

Lyttelton police searches for man stealing petrol in Centurion.

Lyttelton police are on the hunt for a petrol thief operating in Centurion.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu said the thief, who drives a white Toyota Avanza with false registration plates BM 89 BG GP, visited fuel stations between 05:45 and 06:00.

So far, he had struck at two service stations.

“The thief stole petrol on 17 March at the Shell service station in Jean Avenue. On 20 March, he did the same at the Total service station. The two crimes were committed at the same time of the morning.”

The first time the thief filled up the tank of his Avanza and simply drove away, with the perplexed petrol attendant pursuing in vain.

The second time, he again filled up the tank of the Avanza, as well as a 25 litre plastic container. He then handed a worthless Capitec bank card to the petrol attendant before setting off.

Gumbu implored residents who spotted the car or knew anything about the driver to call the Lyttelton police station on 012-644-8600.
