In what was a massive waste of water, a pipe in Lydiana in the east of Pretoria caused a giant fountain of clean water to spout into the air on Wednesday when it burst. On Thursday morning, the water spray was so high it nearly matched the height of the lamp post next to it.
According to Alison Stanfley, a resident of Ratel Avenue where the pipe burst, she reported the burst pipe to the Tshwane metro twice on Wednesday, yet by Thursday morning nothing had been done.
“It is unacceptable that so much clean water is being wasted because the metro couldn’t be bothered to repair the damage,” Stanfley said. She was also upset because, according to her, the Tshwane metro operator she spoke to said they needed more than one resident’s complaint for the problem to be addressed.
“They said they needed more than one resident’s reference number to make sure that more than one resident complained about the same problem. That is ridiculous!”
According to Tshwane metro spokesperson, Goitsemang Molaeng, the reference numbers provided by Stanfley did not match any numbers on the system. “The water and sanitation division cannot find these reference numbers on the system,” Molaeng said, “The complaint is being investigated.”
