Water leaks plague Pretoria East

Another incident of a water leak in the east of Pretoria that is not being addressed by Tshwane metro has occurred.

A water leak in Selikaats Causeway, Faerie Glen, already reported in January, is yet to be repaired by Tshwane metro.

The resident who reported the leak, Org van Heerden, said he was fed up with the lack of service delivery from the metro.

“This leak is causing thousands of litres of water being wasted daily and nothing is being done to repair it,” Van Heerden said. “It is shocking that this problem has not been addressed for nearly two months. There is a water shortage in the country, yet the metro is allowing thousands of litres of water to go to waste.”

According to Karen Meyer, Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor of ward 44, this lack of service delivery is unacceptable.

“There is always a ton of excuses for why important repair work is not being done,” Meyer said.

“We as councillors feel just as frustrated and despondent about situations like these, where water is wasted and complaints fall on deaf ears.”

Rekord reported earlier of several areas in Moreleta Park and Elardus Park that have been struggling with leaking water pipes since January.

In a recent media statement by DA councillor Bruce Lee, he highlights Tshwane’s lack of adequate resources.

“The water infrastructure maintenance store in region 2 is run by a single lady with no computer equipment or network access. Everything is recorded by hand and if a job requires spare parts, she has to physically hold them in her hand to reserve them,” Lee writes.

“The department of water has been pleading with The City of Tshwane’s IT department to install computer equipment and provide network access for the past two years but it is met with silly responses like there are currently no IT tenders issued. This is the reason why a burst water pipe can sometimes take days before it is repaired.”

Tshwane metro was not available for comment about the water leak.
