Mandarin to be taught at school
Mandarin will be an option in SA schools from next year.
South African pupils will have the option to choose Mandarin as a second language from next year.
The Chinese language will be among nine others pupils could opt for as second language from grade 4.
The department of basic education has approved Mandarin as part of the school curriculum and this will come into full effect in 2016.
According to news reports, Mandarin has been added to the curriculum as a non-official language. Other language options include German, Latin, Spanish, Serbian, Tamil, Portuguese, Telegu and Urdu.
The curriculum for Chinese will be developed with the help of the Chinese government.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga reportedly said China was one of South Africa’s biggest trading partners and it would be beneficial for children to become proficient in this language and develop a good understanding of the Chinese culture.
