Water restored in Pretoria East

Residents in some eastern suburbs of Pretoria now have clear water supply restored after they opened their taps to muddy water on Sunday.

Erasmuskloof residents now have clean water after muddy water ran from their taps on Sunday due to a dried-up reservoir, Ward 83 Councillor Francois Bekker said on Monday.

“The water is now clean. I spoke to residents and they were happy to have clean running water. Water was restored in Erasmuskloof and Waterkloof,” he said.

Other areas such as Faerie Glen and Garsfontein had little to no water due to burst pipes in the area.

Ward 44 councillor Karen Meyer said water supply was restored in those areas after 20 water pipes had burst last week.

She said Atterbury Value Mart, however, was still without water after four days.

Meyer said the main reasons for the water crisis in the east were a lack of maintenance and manpower.

“The maintenance department have under-spent 61.2% of their current budget on maintenance this year. In addition, only four people deal with water issues in the east of Pretoria, all the way from Mamelodi to Centurion. We cannot expect four people to attend to these issues. All the pipes in the east of Pretoria need to be replaced,” Meyer said.
