Cornwall Hill College is the Woolies ‘Thirsty for Action’ winner in Gauteng

Thanks to a winning entry from Cornwall Hill College Grade 6 learner, Lisa de Waal, Gauteng will receive a new, fully-installed 10 000 litre water tank to boost the school’s water-saving efforts.

The prizes for the ‘Thirsty For Action’ Competition are sponsored by the Woolworths Educational Programme, MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet and the Woolworths Trust.

This is the sixth year that Woolworths and MySchool have invited primary schools participating in the Woolworths Educational Programme to communicate about the importance of water conservation in their schools and communities.  This year, learners were asked to present water-saving tips in the form of a drawing that details what they can put into action at school or at home. The winner’s drawing will be designed and reproduced into posters that will be distributed to schools in their region.  The Woolworths Educational Programme reaches schools across KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Western Cape, and one winner from each province is selected.

The annual competition is supported by CAPS-aligned educator resources on sustainability and healthy living that the Woolworths Educational Programme makes available to schools.  According to Pieter Twine, Woolworths General Manager Loyalty and MySchool, it’s a natural step for Woolworths to help South African school communities by sharing expertise and encouraging awareness of the importance of conserving water in our water-scarce country.

He says, “Woolworths is a business which is dedicated to sustainable practices including water-saving.  We are constantly monitoring, measuring and finding better ways all along our supply chain to reduce our impact on water, amongst many other leading environmental initiatives. It’s fantastic to see a great response from schools to the ‘Thirsty For Action’ competition which promotes teaching and learning about our environment in hundreds of schools. Woolworths congratulates the four winners.”

The ‘Thirsty For Action’ Competition provides schools with an exciting and purposeful event that they can use to raise awareness of water as a scarce resource during March, when both South Africa’s National Water Week and the United Nations World Water Day take place.
