Creepy webcam short story doing the rounds on the Internet

Prepare to have the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

We use technology and the Internet on a daily basis without giving it much thought. We Google images, share information on social media and email and Skype with friends and relatives we don’t see very often.

But has the thought ever crossed your mind that maybe, just maybe, your innocent Skype conversation has been eavesdropped on? That somewhere, a creep is watching your every move through the Webcam on your laptop? No?

Well, then you might not be familiar with Webcam hacking.

It first came to light in 2010 when a Californian man was arrested because he hacked into young women’s laptops’ webcams and watched them for months.

Since the arrest was made, thousands of cases have been reported.

A company, ZBros Productions, created a short film called “Webcam” that is based on true events surrounding webcam hackers. It shows a young woman having a Skype conversation with her mother. After that first conversation, things started getting weird.

The woman smelled a rat when her laptop started making strange noises and played music on it’s own at 3 am.

According to the FBI, the hacker used a malicious code to infect and control the computers of his victims.

Here are some tips if you feel you are being cyber-stalked:

– Explicitly tell the person that you do not approve of the messages you are being sent.

– Do not accept strangers’ friend requests.

– Make sure your security settings are set up well so that your information is protected.

– Install reputable anti-virus software on your computers and personal devices.

– Regularly change your passwords.

– Do not share your passwords with anyone.

– Be sure that your passwords are not the same for every social media account you have.

– Notify the police and friends and family if you suspect you are being cyber-stalked.

– Keep the rude messages and take screenshots as proof.

– Be mindful of the information you share online with others.
