Swift reaction by a vigilant anonymous source has led to the arrest of a wanted murder suspect.
Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said police made a breakthrough in a 15-year-old case that led to the arrest of George Lethlokwa Madia on Wednesday evening.
“This followed after the police called on the public last week to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of a wanted murder suspect,” she said
Weilbach said the body of a 46-year-old woman was discovered in an abandoned house at a quarry in Skilpad Street, Monument Park, during 2000.
“The 64-year-old Madia is believed to have been in a relationship with the deceased. He was arrested in 2000 in connection with the discovery of the body and appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court. He was granted bail and the case was postponed but he did not return for his next court appearance and a warrant for his arrest was issued. Police have been searching for Madia since 2003,” she said.
An anonymous source saw Madia’s photo in the media and tipped-off the police. Weilbach said police arrested Madia on Wednesday evening at Plastic View informal settlement.
She said Madia appeared in court at the Kgosi Mampuru prison on Thursday on a murder charge. The case was postponed until 9 April.
Weilbach said the police appreciate the assistance of the community member that led them to this arrest.
