Police clamp down on mall robbers
The police have arrested nearly 32 people in connection with a spate of mall robberies that has plagued South Africa in recent months.
No fewer than 32 people linked to 34 mall robberies across South Africa have been arrested in an on-going investigation.
It has been reported that many of these robbers had been connected through the cellphones they stole during their mall robberies.
National police spokesperson Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale has been quoted as saying the police’s first breakthrough came when they found some of the stolen cellphones and sent them for analysis.
Data pulled from the phones helped police to make connections between members of the syndicate and to figure out their modus operandi.
The police were still waging war against the syndicate and were continuing to follow up clues that could lead to more arrests.
Malls that have been targeted in Pretoria include Wonder Park, Wonderboom Junction, Kolonnade, Hatfield Plaza, Mall@Reds, Centurion Mall, Centurion Boulevard, Irene Village Mall and the Centurion Lifestyle Centre.
