The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) said on Tuesday they were proud of their members who defaced the Paul Kruger statue and its burghers on Church Square on Sunday afternoon.
Moafrika Mabongwana, EFF deputy chairperson in Tshwane, confirmed on Tuesday that EFF members were responsible for the lime green paint that was splashed on the national monument.
Criminal charges have been laid against three EFF members after defacing the statue of Paul Kruger in Pretoria. Freedom Front MP Anton Alberts contended that they were guilty of incitement.
“They incited and instructed EFF members to deliberately deface and vandalise or remove colonial statues that ‘remind of the operation of apartheid’,” said Alberts after formally laying the charges at Brooklyn police station.
The three EFF members he accused were party leader Julius Malema, national party spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and Tshwane deputy EFF chairperson Moasrika Mabongwana.
Mabongwana said the EFF was aware of the charges that had been laid, adding: “We are not intimidated.”
Mabongwana said the party was proud of its members who defaced the statues on Sunday.
“The statues remind us of the apartheid era. We are, however, not in favour of the statues being destroyed or damaged. We prefer that they be moved out of public sight as soon as possible.”
