NEWSFLASH: N1 and N4 toll collectors strike
Bakwena toll collectors from the N1 and N4 highways demand better salaries and more benefits.
Workers from platinum operational services blocked the entrance of the Bakwena head offices in Meyerspark, east of Pretoria, on Wednesday, demanding better salaries and extra benefits for toll plaza workers. In addition they were demanding medical aid, shift allowances and transport.
According to South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) shop steward William Magugudi the workers started striking last Thursday.
“Platinum operational services is the labour broker for Bakwena. The toll collectors on strike are from the N1 and N4 toll plaza, earning on average R2 400pm. The collectors were demanding a salary of R7 500pm but reduced it to R4 500 and finally to R3 500.”
Magugudi said collector salaries were calculated by shifts and some workers ended up getting about R1 800 after deductions.
“We had a meeting with Bakwena management yesterday (Tuesday) where they ended up cutting our demands to R3 500 but the company has still not responded to our other demands,” he said.
Magugudi said the company promised to sit as management and discuss the demands and provide feedback by Thursday.
“We have a certificate from the commission for conciliation, mediation and arbitration (CCMA) to go on strike. We will strike until our demands are met by the company. We have lowered our demands too much for the company,” said Magugudi.
He said all workers on strike were toll collectors, patrol drivers, communication and administration clerks.
