Brooklyn police are investigating claims of cloned police cars involved in home robberies east of Pretoria.
This follows a chase by the Hi-Risk unit on Tuesday, in pursuit of a Ford Bantam bakkie and a Toyota Corolla after the occupants tried to rob a house in Groenkloof. The fleeing vehicles were apparently fitted with look-alike Brooklyn police stickers and blue lights.
“We received information that someone spotted a car that was suspected to be cloned. There is no proof yet that this is true and that the cars were marked with Brooklyn police markings. We are still investigating,” said Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.
Hi-Risk unit spokesperson Arthur Crewe told Rekord the two vehicles were spotted around 21:00 on Tuesday night. He said the occupants of the suspicious-looking cars were forcing open a gate when the homeowner alerted the Hi-Risk unit.
“We chased after the cars. However, they disappeared in Waterkloof Ridge,” Crewe told Rekord. He said two men were in the bakkie and three occupants were in the Toyota.
Weilbach said any information regarding the bogus police cars will be communicated to the public once investigations were concluded.
